One of the best parts of my job is getting feedback from our guests while they are traveling.
The practically unchartered territory of Antarctica has piqued a lot of interest. Recently I received feedback from Donna and Steve (from Indiana), who just returned from theAntarctic Adventure (15 days, Buenos Aires to Ushuaia) who shared this summary of her experience:
Out of all of our many Viking experiences, the Antarctic trip was not only the most beautiful but by far the most exciting of them all. We would repeat this Expedition in a heartbeat! The Octantis was perfectly designed for traveling to this pristine, untouched part of our amazing world.
Here are some of the wonderful photos she shared from her trip:
Pam Kelley (from Tennessee) has been on several Viking trips – including the World Cruise. She is on the Antarctic Explorer(13 days, Buenos Aires to Ushuaia) as you are reading this. She has already seen penguins, humpback whales and reported:
We arrived in Antarctica this morning about 10. Just stunning. So excited. Have my first excursion at 2 on the zodiacs. I’m getting all my gear on now. I just can’t believe I’m here. As always, the staff and folks are wonderful. I can’t say enough. Love it. Pam
I asked her how she was holding up in the cold weather and she said it's "not that bad...35 and sunny today. Did the sub today. Amazing."
Pam celebrated her birthday onboard the ship, and shared the following photos:
Fun Facts About Antarctica: The “Last Continent”
Antarctica is a land of paradoxes: it’s the world’s biggest desert that is also the world’s largest ice sheet, nearly two miles thick.
Antarctica is a continent, not a country
It is roughly the size of the United States and Mexico combined and is almost completely covered by a layer of ice that averages more than one mile in thickness, but is nearly three miles thick in places
Virtually unexplored just 150 years ago, this continent belongs to no nation, and is protected by an international treaty for peaceful scientific pursuit.
Antarctica is the only continent on Earth with no permanent residents. There are, however, 30 countries operating more than 80 research stations around Antarctica.
It is the coldest, driest and windiest continent and holds most of the world’s fresh water
There is no Antarctic time zone
Antarctic Peninsula
Because the Antarctic Peninsula, which reaches north of the Antarctic Circle, is the most northerly part of Antarctica, it has the mildest climates within this continent
Its temperatures are warmest in January, averaging 34 to 36 °F
And coldest in June, averages from 5 to −4 °F
**Thank you Donna & Pam for sharing your Antarctica experiences!
